Meet the founder

Emily Verdouw is the founder of Sweet Society Apparel, a Fashion Stylist, Social Entrepreneur and mum based in Brisbane, Australia. Her journey in fashion started in Sydney on wardrobe for Taylor Swift’s Red Tour in 2013 before moving into design roles with leading Australian brands including Zimmermann and SABA.

Alongside her work in fashion, Emily founded a non-profit in 2016 using fashion as a platform to support the rehabilitation of survivors of human trafficking in South East Asia. Her work led to a nomination for Young Australian of the Year in 2017 and shaped a deeper belief that fashion can be a vehicle for dignity, opportunity and lasting change.

Then came motherhood.

As a mum, Emily began paying closer attention to the everyday products children spend the most time in, including school uniforms. She discovered many traditional uniforms were made from synthetic, plastic-based fibres that research shows is unhealthy for kids and the planet, which begged a simple question: could school uniforms be made differently?

Sweet Society Apparel was born from that question. Bringing together Emily’s background in fashion, social impact and her experience as a mother to create thoughtfully designed uniforms using natural fibres, while supporting meaningful employment opportunities for women rebuilding their futures in Cambodia.
